Top 10 Recommendations for Your Next Trip to Hong Kong

Last September, I took a trip to Hong Kong with three of my friends. It was truly a spontaneous decision, and the last time I visited was 12 years ago with my family. I really wanted to see the city from a different angle because my previous trip was on a guided tour, which didn’t allow us the freedom to explore or select the places we genuinely wanted to see or experience. This time, we experienced a vacation loaded with the culture of Hong Kong, special shopping experiences, and a blend of familiar yet novel culinary highlights.

If you’re planning a visit to this city, I have compiled a few tips that will help you with your Hong Kong experience. Check out my top 10 recommendations for your upcoming trip to Hong Kong.

1. Restaurant Service: It’s Not Personal, It’s Efficient

One of the first things you’ll notice when dining in Hong Kong is how fast-paced and direct the service is. At first, it might feel a little abrupt—staff won’t keep long at your table, and they might not flash a warm smile—but it’s all part of the culture. In fact, they’re focused on efficiency. The moment you finish a dish, they’ll whisk it away to keep the flow going. It’s a style born from Hong Kong’s fast-moving lifestyle, so don’t take it personally! Embrace the fast service, and enjoy your meal knowing they’re helping you get the most out of your time.

2. Patience is Key: English is Not the Primary Language

While Hong Kong is a major tourist destination, English isn’t as widely spoken as you might expect. Most locals speak Cantonese, and although many understand English, the language barrier can sometimes be challenging. My advice? Be patient or use Google Translate. Hong Kong locals are generally helpful and will try their best to assist you, but communication might take a little extra effort.

3. Shopping Heaven: K11 Musea, Citygate, and Brand Off Tokyo

If you enjoy high-end shopping, Hong Kong is the ultimate destination. I spent hours exploring K11 Musea—a chic mall in Tsim Sha Tsui, conveniently reachable by MTR from the Tsim Sha Tsui station. K11 Musea offers an artistic and cultural experience, featuring upscale boutiques which give off the ambiance of a fashion museum.
If you’re on the lookout for deals, make a visit to Citygate Outlets in Tung Chung. Just a quick 30-minute ride on the MTR from Central station, and you’ll discover discounted items from your favorite luxury brands.

Finally, Brand Off Tokyo is the ideal place for finding second-hand luxury items at reduced prices—great for grabbing designer pieces without overspending.

4. Noodles: A Hong Kong Staple

If there’s one thing Hong Kong does well, it’s noodles. From the iconic wonton noodle soup to stir-fried beef noodles, you’ll find this delicious staple integrated into countless dishes.

5. Mong Kok: The Spot for Cheap Souvenirs and Thrifting

Mong Kok is the ideal destination for travelers on a budget. If you want to find some great souvenirs to take back with you, this is the spot. I personally got T-shirts for my family back home in the Philippines for a steal price! The energetic streets are ideal for thrifting, featuring stalls that offer a wide range of items, from retro clothing to pre-owned electronics. The ideal route to reach this place is through the MTR Mong Kok station, and I suggest setting aside at least half a day to wander through the complicated streets of the area.

6. MTR: Your Best Friend for Getting Around

Forget about Uber or taxis; Hong Kong’s MTR system is one of the most efficient and affordable ways to navigate the city. It’s fast, clean, and connects you to all the major tourist destinations. A single ride is much cheaper than taking a taxi, and with English signage everywhere, it’s super easy to use. Get yourself an Octopus card—it’s a contactless payment card that you can top up and use for MTR, buses, and even at convenience stores.

7. Try Breads and Pork Buns

If you love baked treats, the bakeries in Hong Kong will feel like heaven to you. I personally loved it. Their pork buns are absolutely delicious—soft, fluffy, and filled with delicious savory goodness. Make sure to try char siu bao, a popular BBQ pork buns from Hong Kong. They’re a great snack for when you’re busy or maybe for breakfast just like we did!

8. Morning Jog Along Victoria Harbour

One of the most breathtaking experiences you can have in Hong Kong is an early morning jog along Victoria Harbour. This is what I did, and I definitely did not regret it. The cool morning breeze, coupled with the stunning skyline views, makes it an unbeatable way to start the day.

As you run, you’ll catch views of some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Avenue of Stars, Hong Kong Observation Wheel, and Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade. It’s a great way to soak in the city’s energy while getting a bit of exercise. Plus, the harbor area is always well-maintained, so you can enjoy a smooth, scenic run.

9. Try HK’s KFC

Yes, you read that right—KFC in Hong Kong is worth a try. I mean, I also love KFC from the fast-food joints we’re used to back home, but HK’s KFC is also different and, as I said, worth a try. The menu offers unique items like egg tarts and soy sauce chicken wings that are both delicious and affordable. If you’re looking for a quick, inexpensive meal, this is definitely a solid choice.

10. Disneyland: Magical Indeed

Of course, no trip to Hong Kong is complete without a day at Hong Kong Disneyland. Prepare yourself for crowds, particularly during weekends. When I last visited this place in December, the weather was extremely cold, but this time around, it was actually quite humid. Although it was more crowded the last time I visited, there were still plenty of people present. That is why…

To avoid long lines, I recommend booking your tickets in advance via Klook. You’ll save time and get deals on entrance tickets and meal packages. Prearranging everything enhances the magical experience, particularly for Disney fans. I booked the ticket with meals and snacks, so it was definitely a very good deal. I totally recommend it. If you have an extra budget, consider purchasing the early pass to experience Disneyland with fewer people and capture amazing photos!

Hong Kong has so much to offer, from shopping to dining and amazing food. Whether it’s your first time or a return visit, I hope these tips will help you make the most of your next Hong Kong visit. Happy traveling, and don’t forget to book your next Disneyland visit with Klook!
